Woman killed by drunk driver in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA 9) -- A hit and run accident in the early morning hours Sunday in College Park has again raised concern about the clash between pedestrians and cars at some busy intersections near the University of Maryland campus.

A young woman was killed along Route 1 by an alleged drunk driver. The accident took place just before 3 a.m. Sunday on Route 1, also known as Baltimore Avenue, at the intersection with Hartwick Street.

Woman, 21, killed by drunk driver in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Police say a driver had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he struck and killed a 21-year-old woman near the University of Maryland campus.

Prince George's County police say 33-year-old Jacky Luangraj of Manassas, Virginia, faces 13 charges related to the fatal collision early Sunday morning, including negligent homicide by automobile while under the influence.

Police say the victim, 21-year-old Janelle Oni of Randallstown, was crossing Baltimore Avenue near the College Park Shopping Center around 3 a.m. Sunday when she was struck by a minivan driven by Lurangraj. She died at the scene.

Police say Luangraj fled after the crash, but officers pulled him over shortly thereafter and arrested him.

No attorney for Luangraj is listed in online court records.

Portion of roof blown off in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- According to the Prince George's County Fire Department a portion of a roof of a seven-story apartment building in the 8700 block of Route 1 College Park has blown off.

Authorities said the portion of the roof is laying across Rt. 1.

Route 1 is shut down between Greenbelt Road and Berwyn Road due to building damage from storm, authorities said.

No injuries have been reported as of now.

Police: 6' bunny costume stolen from Md. shed


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) – Prince George's County police are looking for a suspect who they say stole a bunny costume.

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a 6' gray and white furry bunny costume with pink ears and a pink nose.

On June 6, police were called to the 4600 block of Calvert Road in College Park for a burglary. Employees told police that a storage shed has been broken into overnight and the bunny costume was the only item taken.

2 charged for murder of woman in Md. hotel


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Prince George's County Police Department arrested two suspects in connection with the Wednesday murder of a 25-year-old woman in a College Park hotel.

Officials said they have arrested a 23-year-old Vaughn Darvell Bellamy and 24-year-old Barry Foxx in connection to the murder of Catina Cortes.

On June 3, 2014, at about 1:15 pm, patrol officers were called to a hotel in the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue for a welfare check. When they arrived, they found Cortes suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside a hotel room. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Bellamy and Foxx were arrested at Foxx's home early Friday morning. Police also recovered a handgun from inside the home which Police believe to be the murder weapon.

Suspect sought in College Park liquor store robbery


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County Police Department is looking for a suspect in connection with an armed robbery that happened at the Town Hall Liquors store in College Park on Tuesday morning.

Police said the store is located on Baltimore Avenue and the incident happened at 9:30 a.m.

The suspect walked into the store, demanded money and then fled.

According to authorities, no customers were in the store and nobody was injured in the incident.


Police ID woman found murdered in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police have identified a woman was found dead at a hotel room in College Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Police found Catina Cortes of Far Rockaway, New York suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.

She was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.
Officials say they are investigating this incident as a murder.

Police are still working on providing details on a suspect(s).
