COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The University of Maryland has confirmed multiple cases of viral meningitis on its campus.

In a letter sent to the campus on October 24th, David McBridge, Director of the University Health Center, said they were carefully tracking the cases of viral meningitis and were working with Prince George's County Health Department and the State Department.

"It is vital to note that the current infection we are dealing with is viral, not bacterial meningitis. Viral meningitis is not as dangerous as the bacterial form," the director noted.

Viral meningitis is shed in stool, and causes symptoms similar to the flu such as fever, nausea and vomiting, the director said.
