UMD to show 'American Sniper' May 4
News

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The University of Maryland will show the movie "American Sniper" in early May after the original screening was canceled over concerns that the movie was anti-Muslim.

In a letter to the Maryland community, University President Wallace Loh announced the College Republicans and College Democrats will screen the movie May 4 at 6 p.m. in the Hoff Theater. A panel discussion about the themes and issues raised by the film will follow the screening.

The original screening was planned for May 6 and would have been hosted by Student Entertainment Events. However, SEE decided to pull the film after concerns from the Muslim Student Association that film was anti-Muslim.

After SEE's decision to cancel the screening, the university received calls and emails decrying the decision. Additionally, people flooded MSA's Facebook page with nasty comments about the cancellation.

The university had said the cancellation was not their decision and they were planning to show the movie in the fall.
