Speed limit reduced at deadly College Park intersection


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) – Officials are reducing the speed limit at a deadly intersection near the University of Maryland campus where three pedestrians were killed in separate incidents this year.

The Maryland State Highway Administration announced Monday that the speed limit on Route 1 between Guilford Road/Guilford Drive and Berwyn Road will drop to 25 miles per hour from 30 miles per hour on August 1.

By the end of August, median fencing will be installed between Knox and Hartwick roads to prevent jaywalking.

Fire at McDonald's in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Route 1 near the University of Maryland was temporarily closed Thursday morning after a fire at a McDonald's.

Prince George's County firefighters say a fire at the McDonald's in the 8300 block of Baltimore Avenue started in a deep fryer and then extended up into the ventilation system.

No injuries were reported.

Crossing barriers possible at site of UMD pedestrian deaths


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Maryland State Highway Administration is considering the construction of pedestrian barriers on a notorious section of Baltimore Avenue near the University of Maryland where three people have been killed in less than a year.

According to a memo released in the wake of the death of Janelle Marie Oni, 21, early Sunday, barriers are on a list of five improvements being studied which include possible upgrades to street lighting, traffic signal timing and warning signs.

Woman killed by drunk driver in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA 9) -- A hit and run accident in the early morning hours Sunday in College Park has again raised concern about the clash between pedestrians and cars at some busy intersections near the University of Maryland campus.

A young woman was killed along Route 1 by an alleged drunk driver. The accident took place just before 3 a.m. Sunday on Route 1, also known as Baltimore Avenue, at the intersection with Hartwick Street.

Woman, 21, killed by drunk driver in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Police say a driver had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he struck and killed a 21-year-old woman near the University of Maryland campus.

Prince George's County police say 33-year-old Jacky Luangraj of Manassas, Virginia, faces 13 charges related to the fatal collision early Sunday morning, including negligent homicide by automobile while under the influence.

Police say the victim, 21-year-old Janelle Oni of Randallstown, was crossing Baltimore Avenue near the College Park Shopping Center around 3 a.m. Sunday when she was struck by a minivan driven by Lurangraj. She died at the scene.

Police say Luangraj fled after the crash, but officers pulled him over shortly thereafter and arrested him.

No attorney for Luangraj is listed in online court records.

Portion of roof blown off in College Park


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- According to the Prince George's County Fire Department a portion of a roof of a seven-story apartment building in the 8700 block of Route 1 College Park has blown off.

Authorities said the portion of the roof is laying across Rt. 1.

Route 1 is shut down between Greenbelt Road and Berwyn Road due to building damage from storm, authorities said.

No injuries have been reported as of now.
