Resilience and Positive Self Talk – Work it Like a Muscle

Scientific research has powerfully demonstrated that Resilience and Positive Self Talk is the key to success at work and satisfaction in life. Your natural reserves of resilience, coupled with the thoughts that you think, affects your performance in school and at work, your physical and mental health, and the quality of your relationships. They are the basic ingredients to happiness and success.

My belief is that everyone has a Resiliency factor. I view exercise as I do the Resiliency factor. For example, when we work out we are building up our muscles to make us stronger and physically fit. That is similar to resilience. We want to build our Resiliency muscle to make us stronger in the sense of how quickly we rebound or bounce back from difficult situations in our lives.

In the midst of the holiday shopping onslaught, it's good to remember the true meaning of the season. A friend of mine, Terence Tomlin, a chef and one-time front man of the phenomenal funk band The Mighty Heard, posted a story on Facebook that brought a tear to my eye. I think Terry's story deserves a bigger audience, so here it is, in his own words:

"Last Tuesday on my way to work I saw a lady struggling with her three kids. Looking at them reminded me of June 1980 when my mother took me, my brother and sister out of a abusive household leaving Bridgeport for California.

RIFE 2011 - Rock n' Roll and Electronic Music Films

This week I'm previewing films from REEL Independent Film Extravaganza taking place this weekend at THEARC in Washington D.C.

On Sunday at 12PM, RIFE will have a two hour block of documentaries on music.

The Silo Effect: The Treehouse Sessions follows four young, Richmond based musicians who comprise the band, The Silo Effect, as they make the transition from the stage to the recording studio. Director Les Owen highlights the differences of playing in front of an adoring crowd and locking oneself in the recording studio, where the truth is laid bare. Anyone who has ever played in a band will relate.

Most of us know that exercise is good for your health, mentally and physically. Experts are saying that laughter, too, is good for your well-being. There are many benefits that laughter triggers such as strengthening your immune system, boosting your energy, diminishing pain, and protecting you from the damaging effects of stress.

In fact I just attended a Laughter and Resilience workshop and I have to say that I left with a smile on my face :-)).
