Maryland Residents Eager for a Future Wal-Mart

It is possible that Prince George’s County will welcome a superstore to Oxon Hill, Md. by 2013. The Post reported earlier this month that Wal-Mart has a tentative agreement to build a new store with the developer behind the National Harbor complex.

“We have been looking at the Prince George’s County market for quite some time now.

The Postman and The Pit Bull

The Postman and The Pit Bull

“She is a blessing and has changed my life for the better. Born on my mother’s birthday; I think it was meant to be”. – Reginald Winston

It’s not every day that you hear of a heartwarming story between a postman and a dog, but this one is sure to bring tears to your eyes, especially if you are fortunate enough to meet this destined pair. Piper, a short but sturdy black and white pit bull type dog came to our New York Avenue Shelter in January of this year after being found by a responsive DC resident. She spent some time in the shelter looking for her new family, overlooked as many black and white pit bulls are in shelters. But that would change, after I quickly fell in love with her charm and she was transferred into our foster care program.

Round 3 at the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Round 3 at the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Things are heating up at The National Harbor as 275 students; ages 8-15 compete against each other at the Scripps National Spelling Bee at the Gaylord National Resort. Virginia, DC, and Maryland are represented as we advance to the last group in Round 3.

Round 2 went quite swiftly except for when 14-year-old Marcus Tecarro of Loves Park, Ill., was stumped by the word “ineluctable,” an adjective that means something that’s not to be avoided or escaped. Marcus spelled the word correctly, but was not as lucky in Round 3 when he misspelled the widely used prescription drug, Penicillin.

Potomac, Maryland's 13-year-old, Susana Yau, has represented her state very well today spelling noun's "pierrot" and "bombardier" correctly. Additionally, Howard University Middle School's Donovan Jordan has spelled both "schadenfreude" and "decorticate" accurately to keep D.C. in the game.
